Peridot is the birthstone for August and symbolizes prosperity, positivity, and good fortune. With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, it is suitable for everyday wear with some care. It is best known for its fresh lime-green color, sometimes with yellowish tones, giving it a bright and lively appearance that stands out in jewellery.

COMPOSITION

Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine, composed of magnesium iron silicate. Its bright green color comes from the presence of iron within its structure.

SOURCE

Peridot is found in several parts of the world, with major sources including Egypt, Pakistan, Myanmar, China, and the United States (Arizona). Historically, Egyptian peridot from Zabargad Island was highly prized.

FAME

Peridot became famous for its vibrant green glow and rich historical legacy, often called the “gem of the sun” in ancient Egypt. Some historians even believe that the emeralds worn by Cleopatra may have actually been peridot. Its prestige is further highlighted by iconic pieces like “The Green Goddess”, a remarkable 154-carat pear-shaped peridot discovered in 1893 and later set into a pendant, as well as the elegant peridot tiara of Archduchess Isabelle of Austria and the beautifully carved Victorian peridot brooch—showcasing the gemstone’s timeless royal and artistic appeal.
