Birthstone β June
Planet β Jupiter
ABOUT
Pearl is the birthstone for June and symbolizes purity, wisdom, and elegance. With a hardness of 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, it is relatively soft and requires gentle care. What makes pearls truly unique is their wide range of natural colors, including white, cream, pink, lavender, golden, silver, black, peach, and even rare blue shades. Known for their soft luster and timeless appeal, pearls remain a classic choice in necklaces, earrings, and elegant jewellery designs.
COMPOSITION
Pearls are created by oysters, mussels and clams and are born underwater. The oysters produce nacre as a defence mechanism against any grain or particle that enters it. To protect itself it secretes layers and layers of nacre that in time turns into what we call a Pearl. There are two types of pearls today, freshwater and saltwater, both are cultivated. The difference in lustre comes from the quality of nacre produced.
SOURCE
Pearls are found in both freshwater and saltwater environments. Major sources include Japan, China, Australia, and the Persian Gulf. Freshwater pearls are widely produced in China, while saltwater pearls like Akoya and South Sea pearls are known for their high quality.
FAME
